What a day!! The 1st of April can be a fun one for some people, those who have a good sense of humor. In my Minnesota growing up days, the best joke was always "Hey look, there's a robin!!". Which was appropriate because in the old days the robins really did go south and stay there the whole winter, especially the ones from Minnesota!! (here, they seem to stick around the whole year!) So, to try and trick someone into actually turning their head to see one was always good for a haha "April Fool's" joke! Another try was the old, "oh oh, your slip is showing" (no pants at school for us girls in the old days!) or some other equally innocent joke.
The best April Foolee on the planet is my dad. He is such a good sport about this day and he reminds me of Charlie Brown and Lucy, where she always claims she will not pull the football away at the last minute before he kicks it. Charlie Brown believes her, and he, like my dad believes that "Hope Springs Eternal"!! Every year he doesn't think he will get April Fooled, and every year he does!!
There have been some all time greats, my favorite being the time he patiently stood in a line of coworkers waiting their turns at the cafeteria microwave. He held his little covered dish, filled that morning by my mother with the previous night's leftover hotdish, until it was his turn. He finally gets to the front of the line, zaps it for a couple of minutes, goes and sits down to dig in and opens it up to a bowl filled with wadded up newspaper. Some men would go ballistic, but he just opened up with one of his huge laughs!! And then there is the old standard April Fools - he hates anything mint flavored - so it never fails that my mother will add some drops of mint flavoring to something that he eats or drinks on April 1st!!! "Bahhh!" he will say as he is spitting out whatever it is the mint flavor's in!
Ahh, nothing like a good innnocent April Fools joke, and a fun loving "victim" on the receiving end!!!!
