Goodbye

A fine person, and very talented actor died today ~ Paul Newman at the age of 83. Besides his acting ability, he was known for his philanthropy - by placing his name on salad dressing, pasta sauce, salsa and dog food he was able to donate more than 220 million dollars in profits to a variety of charities. Perhaps the best tribute is that his children and wife only have wonderful things to say about him as a dad and husband. That's all that anyone of us could ask.

Becoming Jane

Today I received my monthly email newsletter from the Jane Austen Centre in which the editor shares her opinion of the new movie Becoming Jane, starring Anne Eyebrows Hathaway. She states that even though very little of it actually relates to Jane Austen's life and it has a sad ending, she still thinks it is a lovely romantic tale.

Well, I don't know, I guess this doesn't exactly sway me from my original opinion of the whole project. It remains to be seen if I go to the theatre to watch this picture or stay home, curled up with a nice re-read of one of Miss Austen's masterpieces!

Anne as Jane?

Have just finished reading the monthly Jane Austen newsletter. They have finally run out of fresh ways to make films from her novels and have turned to making a movie about herself instead. I am aghast. They have cast Anne Hathaway as Jane Austen, and I just can't buy it. Princess Diaries maybe, but as Jane? Never.

Narnia (and free popcorn to boot!)

A last minute phone call from Gloria rescued me from an evening of pulling wallpaper off the bedroom walls to being whisked away by her to go see "The Chronicles of Narnia" at the Regal Cinema in Westfield! It was a wonderful movie, lavish and colorful with quite an accurate portrayal of C.S. Lewis's touching characters. The filming locations included New Zealand, Poland, Czech Republic, England and Griffith Park in Los Angeles which all the more make the movie worth seeing. To top in all off it was free popcorn night! Thanks to Gloria for an unexpected and pleasurable outing!

In My Glorees

There are only two TV shows that I watch with any regularity - both on PBS. One is Masterpiece Theatre and the other is Mystery. Tonight began a two part dramatisation of Agatha Christie's Death at the Vicarage starring Miss Marple!! It is set in fictional Saint Mary's Mead which is the epitome of the quaint English village complete with cozy cottages, gorgeous flower gardens, eccentric characters and of course the unflappable Miss Marple. Almost exclusively "Made in the UK", I think these two series top most all TV shows "Made in the USA" these days!!
