All fun, even the work!

Beautiful weather, nice weekend. Steve left for his folks in Minnesota on Friday, and I was very productive cleaning and rearranging in the family room. Saturday was more of the same, then Delaney came to spend the night. We invited Matthew and Davie over to play SORRY and Delaney won! Then we watched an episode of Perry Mason before they went home. Today the girls and I were at Sunday School, then spent the afternoon here. Delaney, Ella and I went on a lovely walk around the neighborhood before they went home around 4:30 pm. Tomorrow I will finish things up in the family room before Steve gets in around 7:30 pm. I will end the day with a "Stampin' Up" party at Gloria's in the evening. Should be alot of fun!

Ummm, that tasted great!

Saturday evening I peeled apples and Delaney cut them into slices for a cobbler. Turns out Delaney LOVES apple cobbler and as soon as it came out of the oven she had to scoop some out of the pan to cool off and after a short wait, gobble it down! Must say it tasted pretty fantastic....all gone now:(

Oodles of Apples

On Saturday I made my 27th annual apple-picking trip to Stuckey Farm. We took Delaney (10th trip) and Ella (5th trip) who both love going out in the country to pick apples and have a ride on the hay wagon. It is a bumper crop year ~ one tree could provide all we needed, but choosing to pick from alot of varieties and trees was more fun! We also bought gourds, pumpkins, apple cider and popcorn. Next up - apple pie!!

Rally Day

Yesterday at church the Sunday School year officially began with an opening program of music and information about the education opportunities available at Pilgrim. At the appointed time the children went up in front to sing some songs they had learned at Vacation Bible School in July. Hand-in-hand, Delaney led Ella to join the rest of the kids and they sang their little hearts out! The cutest part I think are all the different hand movements that go along with the words - both girls knew them so well, and their future in show choir flashed across my mind!!

Happy Birthdays

Birthday sharers (is that a word?!) today include the wonderful writer Sarah Orne Jewett ("Land of the Pointed Firs" - a must read), architect Henry Louis Sullivan who is famous for the design of many early Chicago skyscrapers (plus my home town bank in Owatonna!), and my own mother Joanne Thelma born at home in rural New Richland (best known for her unmatched baking skills ~ tea rings and coffee cake especially!!).

In their honor, 18 Heavenly Blue morning glories are on the trellis this morning!

A Good Day

Labor Day was really nice - the weather was warm but not untolerable and we had a great family get together for supper. In the afternoon I took Delaney and Ella swimming at the YMCA outdoor pool. Matthew had to work, but around 5 pm he and Davie, and Taylor and Melissa joined us for steaks on the grill. Plus we had fruit salad which Delaney helped to prepare, fresh green beans, Davie’s GOOD mac and cheese, and for dessert Melissa made oh so delicious Milky Way Pie. We played bean bag toss for awhile and in a stunning defeat, the girls beat the boys. Seems impossible that we are heading into the last days of summer!

Aaahhhhh...that feels better

The north wind arrived overnight, and this morning the it is a beautiful 65 degrees outside. I may skip over my "inside" to-do list and go straight to my outside one to make better use of this lovely day! I am thankful that I can make that choice and am not stuck inside behind a desk all day. Part of the trade-off for my "early retirement" is that I am in charge of all things related to domesticity while Steve remains gainfully employed:) There is alot of freedom in my job, but at the end of the day there is sometimes no end!! So I think I will just rearrange my tasks, head outside, and leave the inside list alone until after sundown if possible!!

Bear Sightings

Bear poop sightings that is. My brother regularly has black bears at his place in the woods - he has 40 acres of towering pines and hardwoods, intersected by 2 different rivers, and his land is surrounded by several hundred acres of the same. But during our family weekend they politely stayed away during the daylight hours and only visited at night. Small comfort. He also has seen cougars, gray wolves, porcupines, and lots of deer, but none of them came around either. So the closest I came to anything wild and dangerous was the poop. Thank goodness. Had a great time, lots of hiking, some trail riding, campfires, booya making, drank sangria, played bingo and lawn games etc etc.

On Monday we took my brother’s boat down to Pine City, an hour south of his place, to where we lived during my school years. We had a pontoon then, and used to take it out every day all summer long. So on Monday we took a very nostalgic boat trip out onto Cross Lake, past our lakeshore house and then back again onto the Snake River up to Lake Pokegama and back. I hadn’t seen the likes of those waters since 1969, the year I left Pine City for Minneapolis. Before we left town we stopped at Glor’s, my best friend since age 7, and said hello. It is especially cool to go to her house as it is the same house I lived in when we moved from our lake house into town. I have been in it several times through the years, but my folks and brother hadn’t since they sold it in 1970. A long trip down memory lane that day!!! Then on Tuesday I flew home, out of the little Duluth airport to the cities and on to Indy.

Now I am back here, and trying to regain my stride!

Heading Up North

On Friday I am flying up to Duluth for the family gathering at my brother's place in the woods. He has been having frequent visits from Bert the Bear and Bert's girlfriend, so I am hoping they will realize they are not invited to this party:) As we did last year, we are again having booya for Saturday night supper. It is meats, beans, veggies, wine, spices and more cooked in a big iron pot over an open fire for about 10 hours. I think it will be a fun time, but I will greatly miss the rest of my family not being there with me:(

Out and About

Full day today - first off, down to Lilly to have lunch with Steve and tour the premises. Then over to the Indianapolis Museum of Art to see the Egyptian Exhibit - fascinating! That was Matthew, Davie, Delaney, Ella and me. Then tonight Delaney and I attended Poetry Plus over at church and heard a presentation on "Old Fashioned Gardens". Great to have a day like that every so often!!

(Only problem today was that Ella was disappointed that she didn't see any live mummies!!!)

Toothless Grin

Ella lost her first tooth today, at McDonalds while eating a cheeseburger! Not 2 hours earlier she had a total meltdown when she figured out it was loose. She wailed and shook with fear that it would hurt when it came out, that it would bleed so much that she'd die, that she couldn't breathe with a loose tooth, that she didn't care if the tooth fairy would leave her money or not etc etc etc! So when it came out so soon and without any pain or bleeding, suddenly it was a "cool" thing and she proudly showed us all the empty spot in her mouth. What a cutie! I can't remember much about losing teeth, except that at my house we left our tooth in a glass of water by our bed at nighttime, and in the morning the tooth was gone and money was in the glass!

A Happy Day

Ella Dawn is 5 years old today! She has been eagerly counting down the days for the past week - it is very hard for me to remember being so excited for a birthday to arrive and in a way that is sad. At what age do we lose that sort of anticipation?! Something to ponder...

Dancing holes in my shoes

My parents know how to throw a great party!! They treated us all to a wonderful evening of dancing, visiting and eating on May 31 at the Klossner House in honor of their 60th wedding aniversary. To the music of the Leon Olsen Show we danced the night away - most fun partner had to be my little sister Barbara. We whirled around the floor like we were kids again - the air was thick with memories of Pine Camp Ballroom.

Leon plays a mean concertina - he owns not one but three Christy Hengel handmade beauties, valued at over $12,000 each. He and his band can play every style of "old-time" and "new-time" music so there was something for everyone to enjoy. I was also very honored to be led around the dance floor by my dad, who is much in demand by all the ladies I am told:)

There and back

My weekend in Minnesota was quite fine. My folks were thrilled to have their children at home to celebrate their 60th anniversary which is actually today, May 14. We attended church, then had a wonderful coffee hour with the Norwegian wedding cakes and tables decorated with flowers. We all went to a delicious brunch at the New Ulm Holiday Inn, followed by more festivities at my folks house including a toast to their happiness and opening some anniversary gifts and of course Mother’s Day presents. Three of their nine grandchildren were able to join in so that was an added bonus. My folks continue to amaze me - they have a zest for life and activities that leaves me rather breathless! Both Steve and I will travel back to Minnesota for their big open house dance on May 31st, but first comes our trip to Disney with little Miss Ella on Friday till Monday.

One thousand photos

That's about how many pictures we took out our road trip week before last! Steve and I had each our own camera, and thus double the amount of pictures were taken no doubt. So it is taking me a long time to upload and edit and finish out photo order! We had a fantastic trip - enjoyed every place we went, and had good weather the whole time.

Next up, a trip to Minnesota ~ I am flying up to my folks to help celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary (May 14) plus Mother's Day!

Orders from Headquarters!

Yesterday after Sunday School Delaney helped with food preparations for brunch - her folks and Ella, Matthew and Davie were expected at noon. Here's what she wrote for them to read on a sign taped to the front door:

Please wash your hands after you are entered!
Thank you!

(we are eating a lot of finger food.)

60 Amazing Years

This is really something unusual I think...within the next ten months, both my parents and Steve's will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniverseries! When many marriages last less than six years, sixty is a milestone to be celebrated. My folk's day is May 14, and they are throwing a dance at the Klossner House on May 31st, with music by their all time favorite band The Leon Olsen Show! This is such a sweet tradition, found more in small towns I think, to put on a fete like this and open the doors to all friends, relatives and any others who like to dance and eat! Steve's folk's anniversary comes next January 2009.

Through thick and thin, sickness and health, relocations, family ups and downs, and all the obstacles that life can throw in the way - our parents have stood side by side - simply amazing. We are so fortunate to have these four people in our lives!

Aunt Sylvia's Smile

My Aunt Syliva passed away on Thursday morning - well into her 90's she had lived a full life in the truest sense. A teacher for over 40 years (starting out in a rural one room school), a farm wife and mother, avid quilter and traveler etc etc. But the one thing that I will remember her for is her constant smile and ready laugh. A trait she likely inherited from her parents - my paternal grandparents - and one that her sisters and brothers (my father!) all share and that I really try to emulate every day. As my aunt joins her two sisters, a brother, and parents in heaven I am sure they are sitting down to a great discussion as the Cherrington family likes to do, followed by a rousing game of cribbage!

Aunt Sylvia and my friend Candy

Sad news of my Aunt Sylvia and for my friend since childhood, Candy. My aunt is 92 and recently diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma - due to diabetes and heart condition she can’t tolerate chemo, and has been told 6 months to one year. She has had a great life, and we all hope her pain can be managed to the end. My friend Candy was diagnosed one year ago with anal and cervical cancer followed by surgery and chemo - now metastisized and she is dying. I talked to her today, and she is going to try another round of chemo knowing that it won’t cure, but perhaps buy some time. On top of this, her daughter just lost her house in the southern Minnesota floods. And with a final note of sadness, her daughter’s uncle was one of the 35W bridge collapse victims.

I hope to visit my aunt and friend one last time when I go up to Minnesota in October.

Let's Go Racing!!!!

Our weekend guests should be back to the North Country by now after a wonderful 2 day visit. Barbara and Doug got here Friday night and we went to the 500 yesterday. They were blown away by the greatest spectacle in racing - we didn't let the rain stop us from totally enjoying our day! Besides watching some great racing, being part of a crowd of 400,000 people raising voices to the national anthem and to "Back Home Again in Indiana" was very touching. And Memorial Day (or as my grandparents said, Decoration Day) brings memories of the annual Pine City Parade. I can close my eyes and smell the lilacs we Girl Scouts carried in the parade - it ended at Birchwood Cemetery where we would choose a military grave on which to lay the flowers. And in high school, I was in the marching band - we played John Philips Sousa non-stop all the way to the cemetery where we would then play the national anthem. I wonder if the small towns still have those parades?

Company at Last!!

My younger sister and her husband left last Thursday morning after a two day visit with us. They had been to a wedding in Memphis and it worked out perfect to stop here en route back to Minnesota. We had ever so much fun!

Steve took Tuesday off and we all went downtown. Drove to Lilly first, then went to the mall and later walked around past the the IRT, Circle Theatre etc. Saw several of the new Julian Opie “art pieces” around town. We went to Mass Ave to have lunch at Hoaglin’s, and walked around that area before continuing our tour to Victory Field, Conseco Fieldhouse, the zoo and gardens, Eiteljorg, state capitol, state museum, history center etc etc etc. They were quite impressed with the way so many fine places are in such close proximity. Then it was time to head up to Fishers and visit with Melissa and the girls. Delaney and Ella came back here to spend a little more time with Aunt Barbara and Uncle Doug before I took them home again.

On Wednesday Barbara and I went to IMA, mainly to walk the gardens. Stunning as ever. We ate a little lunch on the grounds, bought a couple of things at the greenhouse and enjoyed the drive through the “old neighborhood” where I pointed out my Conversation Club friend's houses as well as our house on Delbrook Drive. Back up at this end of town we went to the 25 Homestore which Barbara enjoyed and then headed home for a glass of wine. In the evening the four of us went to eat at Claddagh. Took the men home and Barbara and I went to walk off dinner at the Fashion Mall. They left early Thursday morning, around 7 and made it home around 5 pm to the little town they live in outside of Rochester, Minnesota.

I am so thankful for their visit!

Apples, apples everywhere

We had a busy but enjoyable Saturday. It was our turn to take care of Delaney and Ella, so we took them out to pick apples at Stuckey Farm. (We have been doing that every year since 1983, and many of those years I went multiple times bewteen family and preschool trips!) The girls wore their prairie bonnets and aprons from Walnut Grove, and they had a great time. We dropped our apples and cider off here at home and then went over to Woodfield Crossing for the Washington Township Safety Fair. So many different activites and give-aways of course! Delaney shied away from most of the hands-on activities, but Ella tried her hand at spraying the huge fire hose (assisted by a firefighter!), sat on a huge gleaming Harley belonging to a state motorcycle sheriff, and put on a real fireman’s coat and hat for a photo op with a genuine firefighter! They even had a “rock band” whose musicians were all firefighters in uniforms. We ended the day by doing some birthday shopping for Melissa, and then meeting Taylor and Melissa for bday dinner at Ruby Tuesday’s. And then back to their house for cake and gifts. Delaney came home with us to spend the night, and needless to say we were ready to just sit and relax!

Lovely Day

What a fine wedding on Sunday! It was a lovely ceremony, containing Korean, Norwegian and American elements and music. Caitlin looked stunning, as did the rest of the attendants, including Delaney! When the Hardanger fiddler walked up and down the aisles preceeding the ceremony, playing Norwegian wedding music, I reached for my first kleenex of many. Much love and devotion was evident in the beaming smiles of Caitlin and Mike, now honeymooning in Norway. I should think they will return with a Norwegian sweater or two and hopefully a picture of a troll as did I a few years back!

Summer Slipping Away

Today was little Ella's 3rd birthday, and a reminder that with only one week of July remaining we will soon see our flowers and gardens begin to fade in the face of autumn's approach. The school children have only 3 weeks until they march back through the classroom doors. And even though I am not included in that group, it still gives me a wistful and melancholy feeling!

Still on my summer calendar are two trips to Minnesota, more gardening (half-off sales you know), some new furnishings to put into place that will be arriving from Steve's folks, and plenty of other chores and activities!

Almost time for Christmas

Here it is the 21st of December in 2005. And Christmas day right around the corner. Gifts are wrapped and ready to be opened. A few remain unadorned that beckon to me to stop, take a moment and wrap me up in color and ribbon! There is always one more thing to do, what a time of year, gloriously maddening!
I rejoice that today is indeed the shortest day in the year and now as soon as tomorrow a little more daylight will creep into our day. I think the birds and squirrels knew just that today as they were most actively scampering and flinging here and there in madcap fancy. I found myself glued to my kitchen chair with darting eyes like someone gone mad in attempt to capture every physical antic they performed.
Carol gave to me a lovely book that celebrates the beauty of nature in word and picture. I look forward to nestling in my comfy, embracing yellow sofa and while away some time during the quiet I will find in this holiday season. I am most determined. Thank you Carol for spending a bit of Christmas cheer with me.

Six Days, 2000 miles, Billions of Stars

Seeing the Northern Sky complete with shooting stars and the Milky Way made traveling all of those miles well worth it!! The gathering at my brother’s lodge in Minnesota was splendid and spending time in the great outdoors was restorative. His 40 acres of white pine, aspen, paper birch and countless wildflowers and ferns is like having your own personal state park. Hiking paths of every degree of difficulty, two rivers - one with suitable rapids for kayakers (my niece and her boyfriend!), and trails for his ATV’s provided something for everyone! A roaring campfire was kept burning to ward off the chill of the evening, and provided some light for the annual Bingo game under the stars! Delaney and Ella loved the experience of being with the Cherrington clan and vice versa! I drove back home to Indianapolis Monday, while everyone else jetted!

Garden Tours, Poetry Program and Taxi Service

Annual "Garden Tours" to Sue's, Maureen's and Gloria's homes have been conducted and enjoyed this past week by Delaney and myself. Sue has virtually every spot in her yard filled with flowers, shrubs, winding paths and interesting areas. Maureen's gardens are doing well, but the highlight was seeing her lovely new roof and windows. Gloria's hard work showed forth in newly created beds and planting areas, and Delaney very much enjoyed being invited inside Mrs. Worth's "rich house" as she put it!! Gloria's tribute to flowers in the poetry program she presented last Tuesday evening was wonderful! As for me, I have finished a 2 week stint as taxi driver for my Fishers family as their odyssey toward car repair continues. This week Delaney had soccer camp every morning and she was thrilled to finally use her glittery green and silver #3 soccer ball!! I will summon every ounce of energy to embark for Minnesota on Tuesday to attend the annual gathering of the Cherrington clan. For the first time in 7 years we will all be together, 27 of us in total right down to the 4 great-granddaughters. Making the travel arrangements has been a daunting and exhausting task! Hopefully everyone will enjoy the weekend in the north woods!

Absence makes the heart grow fonder

Well at least I am counting on that old adage to be held in good stead in my absence from out website. Where have I been, that is the question. Mostly, I think trapped under construction dust that has stitled my brain. Yes, once again my dear project husband is attacking another area with great aplomb. Our personal space, otherwise known as a bedroom has been undergoing a transformation that began on Father's Day...how appropo! We have painted the walls (after some repair of course, a soft, almost pure virgin olive oil shade. Watery, soft, yet it has a glow that is quite lovely, I think. Then onto the bathroom. Paint and tiling the floor in a lovely Italian porcelain. Soft alabaster color with grey green vining. Looks wonderful, feels great. Yet, alas we are not done, the walls in the necessary room are still not there! Perhaps one more weekend of deliberation and then voila, we shall once again be able to full inhabit out space. I have been such a crab as I am so anxious to clean up the mess and get on with the fun...the accessories, the frill, the thrill of it all. My patience and perseverance grow very thin but I promise to be a good sport and wait like on should for a good thing.

I thank Carol for her many entries this summer. She is right on on so many musings, the horrid bombings, the heat of summer, the fantastic storms that clear the air, her trips, her kids and her grandkids, her birds and blooms. I see Carol and speak often but once again I am privy to such delicate thoughts once and again as I visit a "place where friends share their thoughts".

Be of good cheer, summer is still here!

Overnighter to Minnesota

What a fun weekend trip to Saint Paul for Caitlin's graduation! St. Thomas University has a lovely campus in a spectacular part of the city. And very Catholic and very Irish! The dinner after commencement at Shilla Korean restaurant was delicious and the late night outing to The Dubliner (Irish Pub) was alot of fun! Caitlin's friend Declan and a fellow Irishman played traditional music and every so often Declan was so moved by his music that he jumped down off the tiny stage and began to dance. Other patrons would join in as the spirit moved them! Sunday we ate at The Good Earth restaurant in Edina before all heading our separate ways. Caitlin will be working with Habitat for Humanity beginning in August and we are all speculating that the hardest part for her will be giving up her status as a major clothes horse!!

Close Call

Yesterday Matthew called and reported that the apartment complex in Orlando that he had moved out from only two months ago was burning down. His late evening update brought the news that his old room mate was ok, but the apartment had extensive water and smoke damage. Arson is suspected. I am thankful Matthew was no longer living there, but I feel so sorry for Phil. Another reminder of how fast our daily existence can change.

Oh me oh my

Happy Spring to all. I Am back on the web page as the trusty Mad Hatter has once again remembered who I am. Thank goodness for good friends.

A day looking rather gloomy again but after a nice brisk walk with Sadie girl I could feel warmth in the air. Rejoice rejoice in the warmer air. I almost as if I am taken to walking on air as I observe the daffodils and other early spring flowers forcing their way up.

It is good to be back inside morninglorees, a safe happy place where two good friends share their lives.

St. Patrick's Day Blizzard plus one 2005

They are having a blizzard up in Minnesota right now. I talked to Barbara in Byron and schools there and all across southern Minnesota were closed due to the 15 inches of snow still coming down. It brought to mind the 1965 St. Patrick's Day Blizzard in Minnesota. I was in the 8th grade I guess and I still remember that storm dropping around 20 " of snow to add to at least that much already on the ground. That was the winter that lasted well into April with snow still in places on May Day. Here in Indianapolis we have enjoyed 60 degrees and sunshine the past few days and I welcome that!

Another day in Indiana

A very quiet and rather gloomy day in Indiana. The steel gray sky is looming large over the landscape but promises very little, just more of the same. The thermometer is climbing to the 40's but I fear it will not feel so spring like with the heavy clouds blocking the sun. I haven't even seen much bird activity at the feeders this morning. Perhaps they are sleeping in, suffering from light deprivation too.

I have lit the house with every light around, watered and moved plants to capture the light and ignited candles. I think it is helping to lift my spirits.

The house hums quietly as all three of my boys (men) are on their way. I will wander today with errands and not enter my office until tonight...little folks to retreat with, however I fear I may want to retreat in the full sense of the word!

Enough musing and cheerless chatter. Time to put on the warm walking suit, shoes and hat and get out there in the gray. Perhaps a striking red bird will find me and that surely will lighten my mood.

Beach Blessings

...or "There and Back Again"! I have enjoyed 5 days at the ocean with my Minnesota family in celebration of my father's 80th birthday. From start to finish it was perfect - our hotel was very small and our room had large windows on three walls which gave us a panoramic view of the beach and ocean, the shoreline being 140 feet from our door. We spent time walking there, finding shells and sea treasures or just sitting and talking. We also spent an afternoon deep-sea fishing with success enough to have a fish fry birthday party! Our sunset dinner cruise was lovely as well and we all enjoyed the live band and dancing. What a wonderful world where my parents, two sisters and brother and I can go on our first ever "family vacation" at the ages of 80,75,56,54,52 and 48 in total harmony and mutual enjoyment!!

Still a Miracle

This morning I gaze out at snow. At 4 pm I leave for Tampa by air and at 6 pm I will be gazing at palm trees and sand - an 18 hour car drive whittled into a 2 hour plane ride! The speed of travel never ceases to amaze me when I stop to think about it. It has made this old world shrink to a manageable size!! Truly a miracle to me!

What am I doing?

I have returned from church; first there was the Ash Wednesday service that was lovely. Following I was sitting in on a meeting concerning the building of the new church. I listened and came away wondering what it is I have gotten myself into and why I even care. I must be nuts. Pilgrim will build a church that will satisfy the few and the few will be satisfied. There is no fun in this dysfunctional group. The only saving grace was having a very good and decent conversation with Kevin Harriman, a very neat guy. Don't count on anyone getting the library right, it probably won't happen.

I am looking forward to taking you to the airport tomorrow, we can talk and laugh and wish each other well on our parental visits.

Art must be an expression of love or it is nothing...Marc Chagall

What a beautiful thought, God must love us very much for the earth is so full of expressive beauty that one must say, ahhh.

I am so glad we are friends and we blossom.
