Wild Girl!

Today Matthew, Davie, Delaney, Ella and I drove over to King's Island - it was a very hot and humid day, so lots and lots of pop and water was consumed! We got there about noon, and went straight to the children's ride area - the girls both went on the first several rides, then it quickly became "The Quest" to find more roller coasters that Ella was tall enought to ride! She wanted to go on the huge wooden coaster - no dice. Then a steel coaster - nope, too short. And on it went, one after the other she was not tall enough. And the tears came!! Normally it would take fast talking to get a child on alot of the rides, but not Ella. (Delaney, yes - she is still very cautious at age 9.) Ella has only just turned five mind you, and she can't get enough of speed and motion! We did manage to go on quite a few rides that were wild enough for her, but when the rest of us were totally done for after 6 hours of walking around in the heat and humidity Ella wanted to keep on riding! She sure takes after her Uncle Matthew, who would go ride coasters every day of the week if he could!

Toothless Grin

Ella lost her first tooth today, at McDonalds while eating a cheeseburger! Not 2 hours earlier she had a total meltdown when she figured out it was loose. She wailed and shook with fear that it would hurt when it came out, that it would bleed so much that she'd die, that she couldn't breathe with a loose tooth, that she didn't care if the tooth fairy would leave her money or not etc etc etc! So when it came out so soon and without any pain or bleeding, suddenly it was a "cool" thing and she proudly showed us all the empty spot in her mouth. What a cutie! I can't remember much about losing teeth, except that at my house we left our tooth in a glass of water by our bed at nighttime, and in the morning the tooth was gone and money was in the glass!

A Happy Day

Ella Dawn is 5 years old today! She has been eagerly counting down the days for the past week - it is very hard for me to remember being so excited for a birthday to arrive and in a way that is sad. At what age do we lose that sort of anticipation?! Something to ponder...

Home to the Heat

We returned from Minnesota on Thursday night, and since then the temperatures have been very July-like!! I am so thankful for airconditioning, but I do miss the open windows and fresh air. Soon we will hearing the loud buzz of the cicadas, and that is a melancholy reminder of the summer season moving along all too fast!

Northward

Tomorrow we are flying up to Minnesota, taking Delaney and Ella to spend a few days with their great-grandparents. They are very excited - both girls love to travel and visit and see new sights! Delaney and I hope to do our poetry presentation while we are there - it went just perfectly on Tuesday night at "Poetry Plus" in front of an audience of 12. Ella was in attendence, and you could tell she was enjoying it and paying attention when she would laugh after the humorous poems were read!

Coneflower Perfume

You would think I'd remember from summer to summer, but I don't. This morning I was watering near to the spot where there are quite a few coneflowers in bloom and a sweet fragrance came floating along and I thought - "That's right! Coneflowers have a fragrance!!" It is always such a wonderful surprise to me because for years I somehow missed this whole feature of that variety of flower. No wonder the butterflies and bumblebees can spend hours at a time on top of the coneflowers ~ I will have to take a lesson from them and visit more often also!!

Independence Day

The sun is peaking through after a rainy and cool morning - unbelievably enough it is only 61 degrees right now where normally the temperature would be roasting us on the 4th of July!

I have been listening to patriotic music and recordings all morning - never fails to give me the shivers and bring tears to my eyes. I am glad for that actually because it means that despite all the things that are wrong with the USA, overall I am proud to be an American and appreciate the sacrifices that have been made for me to live here in freedom.

I love the song "God Bless America" and nobody sings it better than Kate Smith ~
