Diane Stanley
Diane is the author of the book "Conversation Club" - and the inspiration for the name of our 22 year old group. The exciting thing is that she will be appearing this Friday night downtown at the Central Library! (There will be several other authors there too.) When I found out she was to be in Indianapolis I quickly emailed her through her website, inviting her to CC on Thursday night. She was gracious enough to reply quite promptly but won't be in town until Friday. Ms. Stanley encouraged us to keep having fun together, and even think about the possibility of holding CC in Rome, Paris or Machu Pichu!! I am really looking forward to meeting her, and having her sign my First Edition copy of her charming book "The Conversation Club"!!

My new friend
Over the past three days, I have made a new friend. A new male friend that is. He spent all day with me on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. He is my floor man - here to lay new flooring in the bathrooms. I don't know what it is about me, but this always happens with guys who come to do work here at the house. I have lots of friends like this.
By the time he left today, he had looked at all the photos on my refridgerator and front entry walls and commented on each one. He knew about my grandgirls, and thinks I must be a real good grandma. He knows the occupations of everyone in my family. After he found out I grew up in Minnesota he asked me if it really was like the movie "Grumpy Old Men" (yes) and can you really pull fish out of a frozen lake (yes) and how much smaller than Indianapolis is Minneapolis (it's bigger not smaller) and is St. Paul a separate city (yes). When I told him Mpls was separated from St. Paul by the Mississippi River, he was astonished to find out the Mississippi could be found that far north (it originates in northern Minnesota).
And on and on and on the conversation went with my new friend. The best piece of info I got from him (other than a blow by blow account of the trials and tribulations of building a house) was that this has been a slow year in the bathroom flooring business. He will only make around $100,000 with a good year bringing him $250,000. Hmmm - he seems honest enough, but those figures blow my mind.
I will miss him....NOT

From 5 to 68 in one week
The temperature a week ago was 5 degrees with a windchill of 17 below. Today it got up to 68 degrees, breaking the century-old record. I have to say that it felt very very wierd to be too warm in just a light coat while out on errands today. I guess that there have always been these swings in the weather, but I say when it's winter, let's just stick to that. You can't appreciate spring unless you suffer a bit first!

Wise words to start the year
It is for us to make the effort.
The result is always in God's hands.
