Let's Go Racing!!!!
Our weekend guests should be back to the North Country by now after a wonderful 2 day visit. Barbara and Doug got here Friday night and we went to the 500 yesterday. They were blown away by the greatest spectacle in racing - we didn't let the rain stop us from totally enjoying our day! Besides watching some great racing, being part of a crowd of 400,000 people raising voices to the national anthem and to "Back Home Again in Indiana" was very touching. And Memorial Day (or as my grandparents said, Decoration Day) brings memories of the annual Pine City Parade. I can close my eyes and smell the lilacs we Girl Scouts carried in the parade - it ended at Birchwood Cemetery where we would choose a military grave on which to lay the flowers. And in high school, I was in the marching band - we played John Philips Sousa non-stop all the way to the cemetery where we would then play the national anthem. I wonder if the small towns still have those parades?

Helen!!
Just wanted to say "Happy Birthday" to a very special, lovely and grand lady ~ Gloria's mother, Helen! She is 95 years old today, and so very young at heart. Love her lots!

May flowers
Well, April showers have indeed brought May flowers...but the flowers really need some May showers. It has been a terribly dry month so far. I have been outside watering everything as if it was the middle of June. But I have put too many hours into gardening this spring to let things go crispy!

Friends, regular and feathered, new table and the Queen
What a nice day - starting with devotions group here this morning and ending with the beautiful birdsong of a rose-breasted grosbeak.
The group of ladies that meets every other Thursday is wonderful - we have been using a book of devotions based on different birds and it seems like an uplifting and enlightening discussion always follows.
And what a day for birdwatching it was: observed and photographed in our yard were a Tennessee Warbler, a hummingbird, a Baltimore Oriole and a Rose-breasted Grosbeak singing the most beautiful flute-like song from the top of the Hackberry tree. To add to this, I got a phone call from the furniture store that our new kitchen table and chairs have arrived and will be delivered tomorrow.
The crowning (sorry!) touch was seeing on the news tonight that the Queen is visiting the colonies for a few days and will be as close as Louisville when she attends the Kentucky Derby on Saturday! It would be so lovely to see her as she was not in residence when we visited Buckingham Palace several years ago! Ah well, I must be satisfied with all of the other blessings of today!
