Work, when laid aside...

Have been going through the "save pile" and trying to sort out what goes where. I came across the little funeral paper for my Aunt Carol who died last June, so this poem printed there is probably meant more for summertime. It can describe me at any time of the year!

I Meant To Do My Work Today

I meant to do my work today,
But a brown bird sang in the apple tree,
And a butterfly flitted across the field,
And all the leaves were calling me.
And the wind went sighing over the land,
Tossing the grasses to and fro,
And a rainbow held out its shining hand,
So what could I do but laugh and go?

Paint

Today the painter was here to work on ceilings and basement stairwell. It is the first time we have had a pro do painting and I was duly inpressed. He dispatched 3 ceiling cracks in no time flat, and didn't even need to use masking tape along wood workwork when painting the basement entry walls. How does he do that?! When I paint it takes me almost as much time to prep as to paint. I think we will splurge and have him paint the kitchen walls when he is done with the ceilings!

January Jabber

I love all things English - I can still remember reading my first Victoria Holt "gothic romance" when I was about 12, followed by real English literature, 35 years of BBC productions on Masterpiece Theatre and of course the Beatles. Can't get enough! So last night when Gloria and I went to see The Queen, we were like the two pussycats of verse except for the part about frightening the little mouse under her chair! Helen Mirren as HRM Elizabeth was brilliant! She made me feel like I have now actually met the royal highness, warts and all.

Another "brilliant" appearance yesterday was having 9 cardinal pairs visit the backyard feeders. I tried to snap a photo of them all at once, but that was nigh impossible and I think I only managed to frame 6 or 7 pairs.

Looking forward to two more things English, the movies "Miss Potter" and "Becoming Jane" ~ although I have reservations about the actresses in the title roles. Renee Zellwegger as Beatrix P. and Anne Hathaway as Miss Austen. Gloria encourages me to give RZ a chance as the previews look good, but AH as Jane Austen is pretty iffy. Those ladies are two of my favorite authors or illustrators of all time so I really do hope the movies will be good.

Happy New Year

A brand new year to crow about! As beautiful as is the season of Christmas the year feels worn and old as December wanes. And then in a blink the year is put to rest and a whole new 12 months of possibility looms out in front. The excitement of it all takes my breath away!

Christmas was especially dear this year for my clan of darlings. We all came together and loved it all. We were very blessed with hugs, laughter, good wine, and lots of treats!

I had lots of tender moments as well with my treasure of friends. Little coffe breaks, poetry potpourri, a long walk and talk with an old friend, a cookie baking session, decorating, shopping for bargains, and just the lovely daily receiving of Christmas cards. A fine holiday all around.

So now I say farewell to 06 and with open arms I embrace 07. My children claim the even years speed along and the odd years tarry. I will say okay, then, tarry or not here I come!
