A favorite poem

Ah, dear friends, dear friends, as years go on
and heads get gray, how fast the guests do go!
Touch hands, touch hands, with those who stay.
Strong hands to weak, old hands to young, around
the Christmas board, touch hands.
The false forget, the foe forgive, for every guest will
go and the fire burn low
and cabin empty stand.
Forget, forgive, for who may say
that Christmas day may ever come
to host or guest again.
Touch hands!

William Henry Harrison Murray (1840-1904)

Still Balmy!

Christmas Day has come and gone and we are still enjoying mild weather. We had a nice visit with Matthew, Davie, Taylor, Melissa, Delaney and Ella over the days of Christmas and alot of good eating and blessings all around!

Balmy

Felt warm in my quilted jacket today while I was out and about, but the lady in shorts at Target was a bit much. Or a bit less. And it's beginning to look like it won't be a white Christmas - perhaps a soggy one. Reminds me of my first one here in 1979 - that green grass really shocked me.

Have to admit that I am pretty slow sometimes. I have very belatedly discovered Mariah Carey's Christmas CD, put out in 1994. It is great!! What a voice - just when you think she can't possibly end the song with the logical high note, she does. My other new listen this Christmas is The Cheetah Girls - Delaney's favorites. We listened to the CD's when I gave her a ride home from Kid's Night at church. She absolutely goes crazy over "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus". Of course she thinks mom is kissing the genuine elf which in her mind, certifies his authenticity!

December

This is such a plump month. So many birthdays, parties, outings, programs, shopping, wrapping, writing, mailing...and all of it fun, really. And then of course there's the fudge and snack mix - the once a year wonders. One 3 pound pan of the brown stuff has met it's match already and more ingredients are in the cupboard waiting.

I had a very nice birthday, thanks to family and friends! Delaney and I (and Steve) celebrated with an evening at Clowes Hall for the Butler Ballet's Nutcracker. Magical! Yesterday Gloria treated me to a wonderful dessert/presentation at the Indiana Historical Society - a charming lady shared her collection of handblown Christmas ornaments and the legends behind each. I now know why we have a spider and a pig ornament!

Have also enjoyed sharing our Snow Village and other Christmas decorating with Conversation Club here last week, and yesterday my devotions group. At Poetry Plus on Tuesday night, we all shared something for Christmas - a poem, a story, a tradition, a song - how relaxing! Now I have the CD player loaded up with Christmas music. Mahalia, Barbra, Elvis, Bing, Peanuts gang, Handel, etc. - and oh yes, Caitlin, your St. Thomas choir!

Next thing on the list is my annual reading of Dicken's Christmas Carol. Just the thing to cure any holiday foot dragging or humbugging.
