Katrina

The past two evenings I watched Spike Lee's four part "Requiem" on the devastation and continuing grief caused by Hurricane Katrina nearly one year ago. Through first person accounts and interviews, interspersed with news footage and still photographs he weaves an account of the before, during and after effects of the hurricane in New Orleans. It left me shaking my head in disbelief at the overall emergency response at the time, and the sad state of affairs that still exists in the city and along the Gulf coast. I would highly recommend watching this program - Spike Lee has done for Hurricane Katrina what Ken Burns did for the Civil War, The West and Baseball. Through powerful words, images and music we learn that our modern, jet setting and convenient lives hang by the most fragile threads dictated by forces way beyond our own control.

Hotter than...

…you know what. How else to describe 3 consecutive 100 degree days when Delaney and I were up in Minnesota. How very odd, to go north and get hotter. We did enjoy our week very much. She was a good car traveler, 700 miles each way and very few stops. Had our Cherrington family gathering at my folks on Sunday the 30th - a fish fry. My father had been busy out on the lake making sure he had enough for the whole bunch of us. We had our annual Bingo game and that’s always good for alot of laughs.

On Wednesday Delaney and I drove over to Walnut Grove (one hour west of New Ulm) to visit Plum Creek, the site of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s sod home. She was in awe of the whole atmosphere ~ the creek, the farmland on the prairie, the country roads etc. all looking much the same as it did for Laura in 1875. The little museum is quite nice with a few of Laura’s things displayed and some recreations. Best of all is the true to size rebuilt sod house, just the same as it was for Ingall’s family before they built the little wood house to replace it. That house no longer stands, but the impression of the sod house remains on the banks of Plum Creek. It is so quiet there, only the sound of the birds, the water and the trees and prairie grasses in the wind.

The wedding shower my younger sister Barbara and I held for niece Caitlin went very well. Delaney helped us alot before, during and after! There were 16 of us for the 11 am brunch shower and the bride-to-be was most appreciative. That was on this past Saturday, and early yesterday Delaney and I started back for Indiana, arriving around 6 pm. So now it is to get things back in place here and see what I can salvage of my poor heat damaged flowers and plants!!
