Thankfulness

I like the middle part of that word the best. "Full". That describes how I feel most of the time ~ not as in "not hungry" but as in "content" with all of the blessings and abundance in my daily life. For my home, family, friends, trees, birds, flowers, freedom of worship, modern conveniences, travel and on and on ~ I thank God! Happy Thanksgiving!

18 Degrees

And as the sun sinks slowly in the west, I bid a fond farewell to the last of my outdoor blossoms. They put up a valiant resistance to the lower fall temperatures thus far, but finally Mother Nature caught up with us and realized she had given us too long an autumn. Looks like it's time to get out the heated bird bath!

Another loss

The music world has lost a wonderful violinist and tireless ambassador for music education. Dick Dennis died on Thursday and he will be missed by people all over the world. He was the Orchestra Director at North Central H.S. for 32 years and we had the privilege of knowing him during Matthew's years in that group. Before and during that time, he was also concertmaster for the Henry Mancini Orchestra, and those of Julie Andrews, Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams and Burt Bacharach. He was really something - at the same time unbelievably demanding and unbelievably funny. I am sure he is playing sweet music for his biggest audience ever right now!!

Where are my birdies

I am lamenting the fact that my backyard birding sanctuary is lacking any feathered friends these days other than a large and forboding Hawk that is holding court hither and thither. Carol assures me that the birds will return, she is wise in these matters so I will hold fast to that hope. However my neck is killing me as I am forever darting my head in one direction or another hoping for a birdy come perching. I did see one of my fine saucy male cardinals the other day and I rejoiced and complimented him fairly but alas he has not returned. Perhaps I said too much and frightened the shy lad away.

November Sneaks Up on Us

With some of my flowers still blossoming, it doesn't really seem like November. Although, last night's storm shook quite a few more leaves off their branches, so I know what my outdoor task will be this week. And also today there was the sad news of the tornado damage to life and property down in southern Indiana.

Here is a somewhat melancholy poem from the Writer's Almanac...

Poem:"Praise Song" by Barbara Crooker. Reprinted with permission of the poet.

Praise Song

Praise the light of late November,
the thin sunlight that goes deep in the bones.
Praise the crows chattering in the oak trees;
though they are clothed in night, they do not
despair. Praise what little there's left:
the small boats of milkweed pods, husks, hulls,
shells, the architecture of trees. Praise the meadow
of dried weeds: yarrow, goldenrod, chicory,
the remains of summer. Praise the blue sky
that hasn't cracked yet. Praise the sun slipping down
behind the beechnuts, praise the quilt of leaves
that covers the grass: Scarlet Oak, Sweet Gum,
Sugar Maple. Though darkness gathers, praise our crazy
fallen world; it's all we have, and it's never enough.

Simple Words Woo the Heart

Poetry last evening was quite lovely. Sharon Harvey presented poems by the Poet of the People, Edgar Guest! As always she did a lovely job. Sharon's charm is her genuine spirit and deep humility. She just draws me in. The collection she shared were simple yet oft times profound. She had us do a little poetry exercise at the end. It was fun, how nice it is that Sharon helps us to stretch our legs a bit.

Poetry Plus has been quite grand of late. With visiting author and Appalachian Trail Through hiker Jean Deeds sharing her triumphs. And our dear Carol sharing a very professional program on the poetry of Robert Burns presented by no other than a Professional Singer and Entertainer from Scotland. We may be a small, insignificant group of ladies but I dare say we wollup a good punch at creativity when it comes to Poetry Plus.

Life goes on and on

I have been a dormant vine on the morninglorees web site. I will perhaps make a new attempt at logging on when I sit at my desk at my work when the computer is ever before me and beckoning me to something or other. When as home I tend to be lost within the throngs of the things most dear. My family, my music and books, my dear little dog, Sadie, and my home that is always in need of something real or perceived.

Carol literally puts me to shame with her faithful entries and marking so many little pleasures come her way. She is a truly a historian of magnificent diligence and creativity. Amazing how she remembers the words to a song eons ago. Bravo. Yet, I will dwell not on the negative and forge ahead with a promise to me and Carol and any dear visitors that I shall indeed give my all to visit our dear garden a bit more often. For I will make time at my desk to think about things that are bright and gay to chase the routine doldrums away.
