Absence makes the heart grow fonder

Well at least I am counting on that old adage to be held in good stead in my absence from out website. Where have I been, that is the question. Mostly, I think trapped under construction dust that has stitled my brain. Yes, once again my dear project husband is attacking another area with great aplomb. Our personal space, otherwise known as a bedroom has been undergoing a transformation that began on Father's Day...how appropo! We have painted the walls (after some repair of course, a soft, almost pure virgin olive oil shade. Watery, soft, yet it has a glow that is quite lovely, I think. Then onto the bathroom. Paint and tiling the floor in a lovely Italian porcelain. Soft alabaster color with grey green vining. Looks wonderful, feels great. Yet, alas we are not done, the walls in the necessary room are still not there! Perhaps one more weekend of deliberation and then voila, we shall once again be able to full inhabit out space. I have been such a crab as I am so anxious to clean up the mess and get on with the fun...the accessories, the frill, the thrill of it all. My patience and perseverance grow very thin but I promise to be a good sport and wait like on should for a good thing.

I thank Carol for her many entries this summer. She is right on on so many musings, the horrid bombings, the heat of summer, the fantastic storms that clear the air, her trips, her kids and her grandkids, her birds and blooms. I see Carol and speak often but once again I am privy to such delicate thoughts once and again as I visit a "place where friends share their thoughts".

Be of good cheer, summer is still here!

Oh no, it just can't be!

It has just come to my attention that the only department store I shop at with any regularity will soon be closed. L.S. Ayres is owned by Macy's, and all Ayres stores will be thus converted. Since Castleton already has a Macy's, I wonder what will become of the space that Ayres will vacate. I have never been much of a Macy's (previously Lazarus) customer, but I suppose I will have to try. Ayres was always more "higley" - smaller and more friendly...I will miss shopping there!

Cool!

As in not hot! We had a nice big storm last night and this morning the air is about 20 degrees cooler and the humidity barely noticable. The heat of the past 2 weeks has been very wearing - it has been hard to get at even the smallest task due to my depleted energy level! But I must report my flowers, birds, and butterflies continue to inspire and refresh me. The "Fairy Candle" plant from Stream Cliff has put on quite a show - tiny feather-like spikes at the very end of a slender five foot long stem are I guess what gives it it's name. My seed flower garden is wild with color - zinnias, marigold, cleome, forget-me-nots, miniature hollyhocks are making for some lovely indoor bouquets as well! This past week a Red-spotted Purple Butterfly made a return visit to the yard; last year I photographed it on a huge mushroom out in back. The hummingbirds are drinking nectar like crazy, the nuthatches are more plentiful than ever this summer, the house wren is attempting another nest in the pottery house after an egg-snatching thief ruined her first attempt, and the goldfinches are as always the summertime favorites especially with Delaney!

Saddened

Today's bombings in London have left me with a sad and also eerie feeling. Last week we used the subway system in Montreal with no thought of any kind of threat to our safety. In September of 2002 we used the London subway system extensively for over a week, and our starting point each day was the very Kings Cross station line that was one of those bombed today. As tourists, we used public transportation by choice; for the workforce in those cities and many others it is used out of necessity. Try as I may, I cannot begin to understand how the minds of those responsible justify attacks like this...
